For the first time since he joined the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is an unrestricted free agent.
There has been plenty of speculation about his future, and with the Lakers not giving him another extension, signs point to a potential departure. The 41-year-old will have no shortage of suitors in free agency, though not many teams may have a realistic shot at landing him. In fact, he'll be quite intentional about his next move.
In the latest edition of "The Hoop Collective," NBA insider Brian Windhorst revealed that money won't even be a priority for James.
"I would just tell you that it's been communicated to me that the number one thing for LeBron next season is happiness and not money," Windhorst said.
James was reportedly set to demand a max contract from the Lakers, though it always seemed unlikely that he'd get one. The Golden State Warriors, on the other hand, have reportedly emerged as a strong suitor for his services. Since they don't have the financial wiggle room to give him a max contract, this is most definitely a positive turn of events.
The Warriors could give him a better shot at winning another championship, teaming up with Stephen Curry and potentially even making a run at Anthony Davis. Of course, he could also choose to come home again and return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, another team without enough cap room to give him a max contract. Whatever the case, it looks like he'll have options, and money won't be the biggest factor.
