Craig Berube speaks out for first time since Maple Leafs departure

Former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube spoke publicly for the first time since leaving the position in May.

Berube appeared on TSN’s "OverDrive" and reflected on his experience as the Maple Leafs’ head coach.

"I really enjoyed my time in Toronto. I know things didn’t go well last year, but that’s the way it goes sometimes, and you get let go," Berube said on Tuesday.

Craig Berube reflects on Maple Leafs tenure: "That's the business"

The former coach had nothing but positive things to say about his time in Toronto, although he acknowledged that it is unfortunate when some players believe it is in their best interest to continue their careers elsewhere. Ultimately, however, he said that is simply the nature of the business.

"But to me, there’s nothing better than being in that environment every day, hockey, hockey, hockey," Berube said. "And yeah, it’s unfortunate that some of these players want to leave these markets and move on to play elsewhere, but that’s the business."

Following Brad Treliving’s dismissal as general manager and the hiring of John Chayka to replace him, there was considerable speculation about Craig Berube’s future with the organization.

Although some reports suggested that Chayka was open to keeping the 60-year-old coach in his position, Berube was ultimately dismissed on May 13, 2026.

At the time, Chayka admitted that the decision was not an easy one, describing it as a long-term move aimed at improving not only the coaching position but also the organization’s overall structure as it continues striving to improve.

Berube coached the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2024 to 2026, compiling a regular-season record of 84 wins, 62 losses and 18 overtime losses.

In his first season, 2024-25, he led the Maple Leafs to the Atlantic Division title and the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
