Troy Stecher delivered a message that Toronto Maple Leafs fans are sure to appreciate after signing a two-year contract extension.
The 32-year-old defenseman agreed to a new two-year deal with the Maple Leafs on Monday.
Stecher could have become a restricted free agent on Wednesday, July 1, but Toronto moved quickly to secure his future with the organization.
After signing the extension, Stecher sent a message that likely resonated with Maple Leafs fans, saying he never took his time with the franchise for granted.
“I know I had my good days and my bad days. But one thing I can say is I never took the city for granted," he said, via Sportsnet. "When I got the news, I was obviously excited. It’s what I wanted and what I hoped for. So I couldn’t be happier to get that across the finish line."
Toronto has also made several other moves involving its defense corps. On June 19, the Maple Leafs acquired Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Raddysh signed an eight-year contract with the Lightning before being traded to Toronto.
Meanwhile, defenseman Brandon Carlo was traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for two third-round picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, while the Maple Leafs used the No. 1 overall pick to select 18-year-old forward Gavin McKenna.
During the 2025-26 season, Stecher appeared in 58 games for Toronto, recording three goals and 11 assists for 14 points.
According to PuckPedia, Stecher’s new contract is worth $2.7 million over two years, with an average annual value of $1.35 million.
