Multiple members of the NFL community have warned the Washington Commanders and other teams that they may not want to acquire current San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk after Aiyuk generated headlines and sparked concerns via comments he has made in numerous social media videos shared over the past month or so.
Meanwhile, former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has a history of serving as Aiyuk's personal coach. During a recent appearance on the "Speakeasy" podcast, Houshmandzadeh shared a strong warning for Commanders general manager Adam Peters and Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels about Aiyuk.
"Adam Peters, you sign Brandon Aiyuk, the Commanders should fire you the day you sign him," Houshmandzadeh said, per David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone. "...What makes y'all any different than the San Francisco 49ers? You don't think he going to do to you what he's doing to them? I don't understand this. If I'm Jayden Daniels, B.A. is my boy. If it doesn't work out, is he still going to be my boy? So do I even want to see if it will work out? Because I may ruin a relationship over sports."
In videos that ultimately may do Aiyuk more harm than good, he has ripped the 49ers and suggested the team is "scared" to release him and "mad" that it signed him to a four-year, $120M contract extension in the summer of 2024. He hasn't played for the 49ers since he suffered a serious knee injury in October 2024, and the club voided the remaining guaranteed money attached to his extension because he didn't participate in rehab sessions related to the initial setback.
Peters was working for the 49ers when they selected Aiyuk during the 2020 draft. Additionally, Aiyuk and Daniels were teammates at Arizona State. That said, at least one report indicated that the Commanders have "reservations" about taking a flier on Aiyuk following his social media activity.
The 49ers are expected to release Aiyuk if he petitions the league office for reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list and then reports to the team for training camp in late July. Houshmandzadeh seems to think Aiyuk should stay off Instagram and other social media platforms for the foreseeable future.
"He might not step foot in an NFL stadium again if he don't shut the [expletive] up," Houshmandzadeh added about Aiyuk.
It remains to be seen if Aiyuk will follow Houshmandzadeh's advice and if the Commanders will pursue other options at the position.
