Notre Dame loses QB Trey Tagliaferri less than a week after his commitment to Irish

You don't often see the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the wrong side of a flip, and that's especially true when the commitment has just happened.

That's what makes the case of 2028 quarterback Trey Tagliaferri so interesting, though.

Tagliaferri committed to Notre Dame on June 25, and he seemed to be bought in with head coach Marcus Freeman and the Irish. In fact, his commitment to Notre Dame came less than a month after he received the offer.

“What made me commit was the people,” Tagliaferri told Rivals. “I love the people there and we have built great relationships.”

That's what made Wednesday's news so strange, especially from the perspective of Notre Dame.

The four-star 2028 quarterback from Oradell, New Jersey, ended up pulling his commitment.

This kind of back-and-forth has become common on the recruiting trail. Even 10 years ago, verbal commitments were shaky until the letter of intent was signed. Now, in the transfer portal and NIL era, where a lot of money is being thrown around to recruits before they even step foot on campus, anything can happen.

Last month, four-star defensive tackle Ben'Jarvius Shumaker committed to Ole Miss, flipped to Colorado and then flipped back to Ole Miss all in the span of 24 hours.

Oklahoma Sooners may be closing in on 2028 QB Trey Tagliaferri

In the case of Tagliaferri, it seems like one of his previous finalists quickly got back on the horn with him after his commitment. He had committed to Notre Dame over the Oklahoma Sooners and Penn State Nittany Lions.

According to Brody Lusk of Sooner Illustrated, Oklahoma may be the reason that the four-star quarterback has decided to decommit so quickly.

"Trey Tagliaferri backed off his Notre Dame commitment this afternoon, and I'm told the Sooners had quite a bit to do with that," Lusk reported. "Oklahoma has pushed hard in this recruitment, and Tagliaferri is now firmly back on the board as the Sooners look to land their 2028 quarterback early"

Wherever he ends up, Tagliaferri is a big-time 2028 recruit. According to the 247Sports Composite, he's the No. 14 quarterback in the country.
