LeBron James waited until June 30, the official start of free agency, to let the Los Angeles Lakers know that he was leaving.
A return to Southern California was still a possibility before James informed the Lakers of his intentions.
Meanwhile, lingering behind the headlines regarding LeBron's future, was the impact his ultimate decision would have on his son, Lakers guard Bronny James.
As reported by Spotrac's Keith Smith, Bronny's contract with the Lakers became fully guaranteed less than 24 hours before James informed the team of his decision.

It's fair to question whether the Lakers would've kept Bronny on the roster had LeBron informed them of his decision before the guarantee date.
While they've said all the right things about Bronny's development, he's still far behind and has been a non-factor for most of his two years in the league. The Lakers could probably use the roster spot for someone who can play more meaningful minutes for them.
The Lakers' decision to draft Bronny drew mixed reviews at the time. On the one hand, some celebrated LeBron for setting his son up for success and the rarity of father-son teammates. On the other hand, scouts had Bronny either going undrafted or being better suited to return to college for another year, so it seemed like a performative move.
Of course, no one can blame a father for wanting his son to do well, and now Bronny with at least get an opportunity to carve out a role with the Lakers and will get a nice little payday for his efforts.
James has always been intentional with every move, and it's hard to believe he didn't know what he was doing here. Now, it'll be interesting to see how the Lakers deal with Bronny's minutes and role.
