Eyebrows were raised when it was recently learned that Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson returned to the Cleveland area this week to work out at the team's facility.
This happened amid the competition with second-year pro Shedeur Sanders for the starting job that technically was put on pause at the beginning of the NFL's summer break.
During a Thursday appearance on Cleveland sports radio station 92.3 The Fan, Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer suggested it's a big deal that Watson was in Northeast Ohio ahead of the July 4 holiday.
"I think that one of the interesting developments this week was the fact that Deshaun took it upon himself to come back into town on his summer break," Cabot said. "He brought his physical therapist, Billy Voltaire, with him from Florida, and he also brought his quarterback coach, Quincy Avery, up here with him. He was out there throwing to some guys. including [tight end Harold Fannin Jr.], which was another interesting development because Harold hasn't been practicing this offseason. He is recovering from an injury, and we haven't seen him out there."
"When they get back to camp, I do believe it's going to be a robust competition... I thought it was very significant Deshaun came back up here to throw, to train, to show this football team and coaching staff he means business here."

Both Watson and Sanders spent the spring learning a new offense being installed by first-year head coach Todd Monken. While Sanders made seven starts last season as a rookie, Watson is trying to shake off rust that has accumulated due to the fact that he hasn't played in a game since he first suffered a torn Achilles tendon in October 2024. In total, Watson has made just 19 regular-season starts since September 2021.
"I thought it was very significant that Deshaun came back up here to throw, to train, and I think to show this football team and this coaching staff that he means business here," Cabot continued.
As recently as earlier this week, multiple reports claimed that Watson is the favorite to win the starting job over Sanders. Not everybody agrees with such assessments, and Cabot reminded Watson that nothing will be handed to either signal-caller from the beginning of training camp through at least a portion of the preseason.
"I think when they get back to camp, I really do believe that it's going to be a robust competition between Deshaun and Shedeur," Cabot added.
That competition likely won't get truly interesting until the Browns open the preseason with a matchup at the Chicago Bears on Aug. 15.
