In a span of a week, the Boston Celtics have gone from potentially having Giannis Antetokounmpo to replacing Jaylen Brown with Paul George.
Understandably, the fan base might not feel the team got much better with the most recent string of moves.
General manager Brad Stevens reportedly refused to meet the Milwaukee Bucks' asking price for Giannis, but that wasn't the only deal-breaker.
According to NBA analyst Bill Simmons, Giannis didn't give his blessing to be traded to the Miami Heat until the Celtics refused to give him the contract extension he wanted.
"They were talking about extensions with the Celtics, and it came down to two years at 30 percent of the cap could be the extension or three years, 35 percent, and the Celtics were pretty entrenched, and two for 30, and Giannis wanted three for 35, and they couldn't agree on that," Simmons reported. "And that's when he greenlit the Miami trade."
While the new CBA makes it tougher for teams to stack up big contracts, this was the type of move that could've put the Celtics over the top.
Instead, the cat got out of the bag, and the news broke that Brown was available in trade talks.
Now, Brown will team up with Joel Embiid, V.J. Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia, while the Celtics hope that 36-year-old George can be a better sidekick for Jayson Tatum.
It's still too early to tell how things will go down, but for now, there are valid reasons to believe the Celtics dropped the ball with their latest decisions.
