Maple Leafs assistant GM addresses Matthew Knies trade speculation

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the NHL franchises undergoing significant changes at every level ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Among the biggest developments this offseason are roster moves, including selecting Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL Draft and acquiring forward Nick Paul from the Tampa Bay Lightning. 

At the same time, speculation has continued to swirl around some of the Maple Leafs’ biggest stars, including Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews.

Speaking on the latest edition of TSN’s "OverDrive," Maple Leafs assistant general manager Ryan Hardy addressed the rumors surrounding Knies, 23.

Hardy said he understands why so much speculation has emerged, especially after the team hit rock bottom during the 2025-26 season. However, he emphasized that Knies is the type of player who helps teams win the Stanley Cup and made it clear Toronto wants to keep him.

"Because of all the protections that so many of our other players have, when it sort of hit rock bottom in the middle of the season, everybody looks and says, 'Oh, how are they gonna make the team better?' And I think that's been one that, for whatever reason, has gained a lot of steam," he said. 

"And the reality is that Matthew Knies is a guy that, players like him and him as an individual are guys that help you win the Stanley Cup. And every team needs guys like that to help you win the Stanley Cup."

Hardy also pointed to Knies’ versatility as a forward and his ability to play alongside Matthews as key reasons why the Maple Leafs have no interest in moving him.

"He's got some flexibility to play with Auston [Matthews], to play in some different situations, and he's kind of built for the playoffs. We're in contact with his group, you know, as you always are with all your players. But Matthew Knies is an important part of the Maple Leafs, and anything beyond that is really just speculation."
