The Houston Rockets wasted a perfect opportunity to make a deep postseason run last season.
Facing an injury-riddled Los Angeles Lakers squad, Ime Udoka's team couldn't get past them in the first round, with Kevin Durant also missing time with injuries.
That raised doubts about the Rockets' plans with their future Hall of Famer and his fit with their current timeline.
That's why it's not much of a surprise to hear that he might be available at the right price.
According to ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel, the Rockets, Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics had talks for a three-team trade that would've sent Jaylen Brown to Houston, Alperen Sengun to Boston and Durant to Detroit.
While the talks never materialized into anything substantial, that shows that they're open to offloading Durant at the right price.
"Whether or not the Rockets look to continue their partnership with Durant is the big question at large, especially since they don't view him as an 'untouchable' talent in trade talks on their roster," wrote Siegel. "Houston viewed the opportunity to acquire Durant as a way to upgrade from Jalen Green and bridge the gaps in their lineup to contend in the West, but by no means was this addition viewed as a long-term commitment."
Also, with another burner account scandal and rumors that Durant dissed his teammates on social media, it might make sense for the Rockets to consider a trade.
Durant still has two years left in his contract, including a player option for next year. He's slated to make $90 million in total, and that might be a bit too much for any 38-year-old:
"Many around the league are skeptical of the Rockets wanting to keep Durant through the end of his current contract running through the 2027-28 season," added Siegel.
Acquiring Durant hasn't done much to boost any team's championship chances for a while now — only on paper.
Even so, there should always be a market for a future first-ballot Hall of Famer.
