Astros' Yordan Alvarez hits familiar holiday walk-off blast vs. Rays

No stranger to setting off fireworks, Yordan Alvarez sent the home fans happy on Saturday with a big blast of his own.

Alvarez crushed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to hand the Houston Astros a 10-8 win over the Tampa Bay Rays as the United States celebrated America's Independence Day.

Yordan Alvarez sparked fireworks all on his own

Doing it in the most dramatic fashion possible, Alvarez sent a 2-3 pitch to straightaway center field. Alvarez's walk-off two-run shot was his second homer of the game — he finished 3-for-4 with the pair of home runs and six RBIs. His first was on his initial at-bat of the game.

Astros fans have grown accustomed to watching Alvarez save the day, even being able to remember his past heroics on the same holiday four years ago. Because Saturday wasn't Alvarez's first summer holiday walk-off home run.

The Astros' designated hitter also went yard to secure a win against the Kansas City Royals on July 4, 2022.

With three home runs in consecutive games, Alvarez now has 29 on the year. He's only nine away from setting a new career-high, ironically achieved in the last season he hit a Fourth of July walk-off.

Alvarez is on pace to have a career year

In addition to his home run total, Alvarez has 67 RBIs, 104 hits, 62 runs scored and 16 doubles. His slash line is why he's in the MVP conversation. He's hitting .324, which would shatter his previous single-season best, .433 OBP and a MLB-leading .645 slug.

But despite Alvarez's heroics, the Astros are still out of the playoff picture. Houston is only 44-47, granted they sit only 2.5 games back of the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers in a tightly packed American League West.
