For more than a decade now, Draymond Green has been the heart and soul of the Golden State Warriors.
For better or worse, the hot-headed power forward has been the team's vocal leader and catalyst, but he's also been the odd man out lately. With his play declining and the Warriors in dire need of help, Green's contract has been the subject of trade speculation. Now, he's opted out of his deal to reportedly help the team have financial flexibility to sign LeBron James.
But what if his fellow Klutch Sports athlete and dear friend doesn't land in the Bay Area? According to Yahoo Sports' Kevin O'Connor, that could also signal the end of Green's days in San Francisco.
“Draymond Green, just a few months ago, was involved in trade talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Draymond also knows that there’s nothing stopping the Warriors from trading him again six months from now, when he’s eligible to be dealt after re-signing. He hasn’t re-signed yet,” O'Connor said.
O'Connor wondered whether Green would no longer see himself as untouchable on Steve Kerr's team, and failing to land two other stars could also lead to his departure.
“Could it be that Draymond is a package deal? If the Warriors acquire Anthony Davis, it’s a package deal with LeBron and Draymond. Is it possible Draymond Green could leave the Warriors if they don’t sign LeBron James and trade for Anthony Davis? It’s not outside the realm of possibility,” he added.
Technically, Green is a free agent, so he can join any team that wants him and has enough cap space to sign him. He's always been vocal about his desire to be a Warrior for life, and he stood pat when he could've left a couple of years ago. Then again, he's quite close with James, and perhaps the opportunity to play with him for what will most likely be his final season will outweigh his loyalty to the Warriors.
