With every quality start, Cam Schlittler continues to separate himself from past greats who once wore the New York Yankees uniform.
On Monday night, the 25-year-old right hander furthered enhanced his 2026 season that already stands as one of the best by any Yankees pitcher ever.
Schlittler went through eight innings, allowing only one run and four hits with eight strikeouts in the Yankees' 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. And in doing so, he brought his season ERA down to a level no Yankees pitcher has achieved through 19 starts in decades.
Schlittler's 2.01 ERA is the lowest by any pitcher after 19 starts in franchise history since Baseball Hall of Famer Phil Niekro posted a 1.88 in 1984.
Now 9-5 on the year, Schlittler's historically low ERA is thanks in part to his 131 strikeouts and 0.93 WHIP. He has also only walked 21 batters in 112.0 innings of work.
Picking up right where he left off after enjoying instant success last season, Schlittler, who made his MLB debut on July 9, 2025, went 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 14 starts and 73.0 innings pitched as a rookie.
It's now up to Schlittler to maintain his dominance throughout the rest of the summer. Because in doing so, he will remain a favorite in the American League Cy Young race and allow the Yankees to stay in the division race — New York still sits three games back of Tampa Bay despite the most recent head-to-head victory.
