Two-minute drill: Wedding bells, off-field issues, Commanders make quiet defensive splash

Training camp may still be a few weeks away, but that has not stopped the NFL from having a lot of storylines off the field in the last week.

From the wedding that had everyone talking and one player's off-field issues to an NFC franchise adding some defensive depth, here is what you should know around the league.

Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift tie the knot at Madison Square Garden

Fourth of July weekend had a spark before the fireworks were even lit when the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and entertainment superstar Swift officially married on Friday night. Several celebrities were part of the roughly 1,000 guests who reportedly attended the ceremony at the home of the recently crowned NBA-champion New York Knicks, including the officiant Adam Sandler.

While the ceremony alone attracted a lot of attention, NFL media partners were in attendance as well, including NFL on CBS commentators Jim Nance and Tony Romo. Kelce, who currently co-hosts the “New Heights” podcast with his brother and former Super Bowl champion Jason Kelce, has previously expressed interest in covering games when his playing career is over.

While it remains unclear if Travis Kelce wants to play past the 2026 season or where he ends up when he finally hangs it up, it sounds like the just-married TE is still going to make an impact on the sport long past his playing career.

Terrion Arnold saga takes another turn

The 23-year-old cornerback and 2024 first-round draft pick out of Alabama was arrested on June 24 and is facing charges of armed robbery and kidnapping related to an incident in February just outside Tampa, Florida.

While the Detroit Lions eventually released him, multiple outlets reported on Monday that Arnold cleared wavers and is therefore expected to meet with any NFL teams that may have interest in him, although none of them claimed him before Monday's 4 p.m. ET deadline.

While a torn shoulder cut his 2025 season short, Arnold had 60 total tackles and 10 passes defended during his rookie season and became one of the cornerstones of the Lions secondary.

Arnold’s performance on the field is certainly more than enough to warrant attention from other teams as someone who was a proven starter in the Lions secondary with two years and $4.8M remaining on his rookie deal. Instead, he is mired in a serious off-field matter and garnering a lot of headlines away from the field, potentially facing a sentence of up to life in prison if convicted.

Commanders add secondary depth

As training camp approaches, some teams are still making some moves ahead of the 2026 season. One of those moves quietly took place on Monday when the Washington Commanders signed veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas to a one-year deal worth up to $3.8M, making this the sixth different team the nine-year CB has played for in his career.

For a franchise that allowed the sixth-most points per game (26.5 PPG) last season, Douglas now joins new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones and key offseason additions Leo Chenal, Odafe Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, Amik Robertson, Nick Cross and first-round draft pick Sonny Styles as the Commanders look to put a much better defensive unit on the field.

Even though Douglas has played on three different teams the last three seasons — most recently with the Miami Dolphins in 2025 — he had a pair of interceptions and has registered at least 57 total tackles in seven of his nine seasons, giving the Commanders a productive defensive back with a lot still left in the tank.
