Shane van Gisbergen and Austin Hill have a history that may or may not have culminated in the former wrecking the latter in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.
On Lap 45 of the eero 400, van Gisbergen made contact with Hill, which sent Hill hard into the outside wall and knocked him out of the race.
Hill had previously gotten into van Gisbergen at Pocono on June 14 to trigger a crash and made a costly mistake at Naval Base Coronado on June 21 that led to an accident that took out van Gisbergen. The two also tangled in a NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Sonoma in 2024, with Hill flipping off van Gisbergen as he did his celebratory burnout.
In the mind of Richard Childress, whom Hill drives for in the Cup and O'Reilly Series, there was no doubt as to whether or not the contact was intentional.

Spotter: "van Guggenheimer or however you say his last name."
Childress: "Yep, it was just payback for California."

Hill was frustrated after the crash, with his team urging him not to retaliate under caution and potentially incur a penalty.
NASCAR will likely examine the incident later in the week to determine if van Gisbergen could be penalized.
