A free agent at 37, Von Miller still has a desire to play. But based on his recent comments, it's possible he would've felt more satisfied to call it a career if he made a different decision around this same time one year ago.
Always outspoken, Miller was honest about his lone season with the Washington Commanders, where he spent the 2025 season, during an appearance on the "89" show with former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith and James Palmer. Miller said he picked the wrong team.
"I only got two offers last year. I have one contract offer from the Washington Commanders. That's when I went and played. And I had one offer from the Seattle Seahawks. And obviously, I picked the wrong team on that one," said Miller.
"It would have been three teams, three different teams with three Super Bowls. But that's just how it's supposed to be."
Commanders fans may not appreciate hearing a player express regret in signing with their team, but it's also impossible to argue with Miller's outlook after the fact.
The Seahawks embarked on an improbable run to the Super Bowl, lifting the Lombardi Trophy after a convincing victory over the New England Patriots. And in contrast, Miller and the Commanders endured a miserable 5-12 season. Obviously, being part of Seattle's championship season would've been more enjoyable and earning a third Super Bowl ring with a third different team would've further enhanced Miller's football legacy.
However, the decision was far from easy and Washington appeared to be the better situation at the time. Because when Miller was weighing his two options, the Commanders were coming off making an NFC Championship Game appearance and the Seahawks were had missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
Assuming the money was similar and with an eye on trying to win, it made sense for Miller to pick Washington over the uncertainty that was Seattle heading into the 2025 season. And it wasn't all bad for the eight-time Pro Bowler with the Commanders. He made 26 tackles, his highest total in four years, and led the team in sacks with nine, the most he recorded in a season since 2018.
it's also not like Miller has never experienced winning and needed to go for it all one last time before hanging up his cleats. A two-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP, Miller has a resume that can argue as being worthy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 203 NFL games and 164 starts, Miller has 607 tackles with 462 credited as solo, 177 tackles for a loss, 27 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions.
But for Miller, if he would've said yes to the Seahawks will always be a "what if?" in his career as he tries to wait for teams to call about 2026 and better predict the outcome of the upcoming season.
