South Carolina lands four-star WR Joseph 'Jet' Gibbs to kick off 2028 class

The South Carolina Gamecocks have landed the first commitment of their 2028 recruiting class.

That commitment has come from one of the best athletes in the country for 2028, wide receiver Joseph "Jet" Gibbs from Haw River, North Carolina.

Checking in at 6-foot-1, 187 pounds, Gibbs can do a lot on the football field.

As a sophomore at Southeast Alamance High School, he caught six passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns as a wide receiver on offense. He played cornerback on defense, and he also runs track.

Gibbs was a state qualifier in the 100-meter dash, so he's got some major speed.

South Carolina recruited him as a wide receiver, and barring any changes (which happen all the time in college football), he'll be coached by wide receivers coach Mike Furrey.

Who convinced Joseph "Jet" Gibbs to commit to South Carolina?

Furrey played a huge role in getting the rising junior in high school to commit to South Carolina. Shane Beamer's aura also stood out.

“The big reasons I committed to South Carolina is because I have a great relationship with the coaches, I loved the experience and the way Coach Furrey coaches, I love the campus, and it’s close to home,” Gibbs told GamecockCentral. “I’ve been to South Carolina twice, and I loved how I felt at home each time I came and really could visualize myself going there. The environment was really inviting and welcoming. Coach Beamer is a really hyper coach and really motivating. The energy I saw while at one of their spring practices was surreal.”

Beamer, Furrey and the Gamecocks will be hoping that Gibbs holds on to this commitment through the entirety of the recruiting process. As of now, he's South Carolina's first 2028 commitment, but once one domino falls on the recruiting trail, others tend to follow suit.

Gibbs is ranked as the No. 45 receiver in the 2028 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.
