San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk may have burned a bridge regarding his NFL future when he and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels seemed to recently take shots at each other via social media.
Aiyuk returned to social media on Wednesday to deliver new messages to Daniels and to any clubs that may be interested in acquiring him this summer.
"He said, 'I don’t do that Internet s—, bro. Hit my phone if you gotta talk to me, bro. You got my number,'" Aiyuk said about Daniels, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "I called ...he don’t answer. Hit my phone, bro. It’s important. It’s the money on the line."
Aiyuk shared this post after multiple reports suggested that the Commanders were going to pivot and explore other options, such as possibly signing veteran receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Aiyuk currently isn't available to any team, as he hadn't yet petitioned the NFL for reinstatement from the 49ers’ reserve/left squad list as of Wednesday night. He recently said he "will not be reinstating with [the 49ers] nor ever doing any kind of business with them," which would lead one to believe the Niners will retain his rights for the foreseeable future.
Multiple noteworthy members of the NFL community have voiced concerns about Aiyuk's behavior and about the numerous videos he has posted on social media over the past couple of months. On Wednesday, he seemed to send a message to those individuals and to teams that may want him to take a break from Instagram.
"Well, s—, I gotta get paid somehow, 'cause the employer holding me captive without pay," Aiyuk said, per David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone. "At least social media paying. I'll tell y'all what — I get a job back in the NFL, man, I'm still gonna be on my bulls— on social media."
Aiyuk's "holding me captive without pay" line was in reference to the fact that the 49ers previously voided the remaining guaranteed money attached to his contract because he didn't participate in rehab sessions related to the serious knee injury he suffered in October 2024. He hasn't played in an NFL game since he went down with that setback, and it's unclear if any team would reach out to him if he petitions the league for reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list and is ultimately released by the Niners later this summer.
