Two seasons removed from last playing in the NFL, Derek Carr is still receiving interest from teams. However, it will take a "special situation" to convince the veteran gunslinger to put an NFL uniform back on and return to action.
Speaking out for the first time since hinting about his possible interest in playing again, Carr, who last played in 2024 with the New Orleans Saints, revealed some news while also making his intentions clear during an appearance on NFL Network's Good Morning Football live from competing in the American Century Championship golf event.
“I never say never,” said Carr when asked about the prospects of seeing sign with a team.
But even though he's not shutting the door completely, the 35-year-old family man isn't interested in enduring the NFL grind unless it's truly worth it.
"It would take a special situation. There were multiple teams that reached out to me this offseason. I won’t say who or how, but they reached out and were gauging my interest on what I wanted to do. They were good, solid football teams."
Without knowing which teams called Carr, it's fair to assume none of them stood out enough to get him excited enough. Simply put, Carr must not believe any of the teams he's talked to have a legitimate shot at making a Super Bowl, something that eluded him during his 11 NFL seasons.

"I’m just at the point where I just want to win. I want to win. So if I were to do it, it would have to be a special team that maybe lost somebody or needed somebody, but even then, it’s not guaranteed," Carr added. "I’m having too much fun hanging out with my wife, hanging out with my kids, and trying to get good at golf. So it would take a special deal."
Possibly influenced by watching Philip Rivers join the Indianapolis Colts late in the 2025 season, Carr knows he doesn't have to rush to get on a roster. As long as he does stay in shape and a team feels he can fit into their system, it's still possible the four-time Pro Bowler could be taking snaps back under center before the end of the year.
And waiting for a contender to experience losing their starting quarterback to an injury, something that is always a possibility in the NFL, might be Carr's best shot at actually landing on a team with a shot at winning.
To this point, Carr owns 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns to 112 interceptions a 65.1 completion percentage in 169 games across 11 NFL seasons, mostly synonymous with the Las Vegas Raiders. Carr only played in one playoff game after the 2021 regular season, likely a big reason why he's requiring a chance at a championship to come out of retirement.
