Bryson DeChambeau picked to miss Open Championship cut

Bryson DeChambeau is having an uncharacteristically poor season. The two-time U.S. Open winner has missed the cut in all three major championships so far — the first time he's done so in his career — and CBS analyst Johnson Wagner predicts he will complete the sweep at next week's Open Championship.

Wagner, a three-time PGA Tour winner who's worked as a golf analyst since 2023, bashed DeChambeau for his play this season and said he's unlikely to play the weekend at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.

"I was going to mention Bryson because he doesn’t need to win this next major; he needs to make a cut," Wagner said on CBS Sports. "He’s been terrible. It's been absolutely atrocious. The only time he’s played well at an Open Championship in recent years is last year, and it was just the last three rounds when the wind died down.

"He is not built for The Open Championship. I would say there’s a much better chance of him missing the cut at Royal Birkdale than him even just making the cut."

Can Bryson DeChambeau finally make a cut?

Wagner has a point there. In eight career starts at the Open Championship, DeChambeau has three missed cuts and only two top-30 finishes. It's the only major championship in which the American has never recorded a top-five finish. Open Championship courses demand creativity and sharp iron play amid strong, unpredictable winds, which are two of DeChambeau's biggest weaknesses.

It would be a different story if DeChambeau were in good form, but that's not the case. The LIV Golf star has lost strokes on approach in all three major starts this season. In his most recent start at the U.S. Open, he lost 1.91 strokes on approach in two rounds to rank 145th in the 156-man field. DeChambeau has also been hopeless with his short game, as he's lost 7.72 true strokes from around the green in his six major championship rounds this year.

DeChambeau is searching for answers in regard to his swing, and he probably won't find any across the pond at Royal Birkdale.
