Gable Steveson made his highly-anticipated bow in the UFC tonight as he knocked out Elisha Ellison within a round at T-Mobile Arena.

Jon Jones headed up an all-star corner for the Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler who made the switch into MMA last year. He has been fast-tracked to the big leagues after a string of decisive victories on the regional circuit.

Steveson was one of a number of major names to join the UFC 329 undercard, with former world champions like Cody Garbrandt and Robert Whittaker also on the prelims. They were all overshadowed, though, by the looming return of Conor McGregor in the main event.

It didn’t take long for the explosive Gable Steveson to get right into promotional veteran Elisha Ellison. The former police officer-turned UFC heavyweight had promised a big showing against the wrestler, but was ultimately put away within seconds.

Walking out to Dr Dre’s ‘Nuthin’ but a “G” Thang’, Steveson showed more personality in his few minutes getting to the octagon than he did throughout the entire build-up. Ellison insisted he wouldn’t be intimidated by Jon Jones in the corner opposite him, and he showed that as he traded fearlessly early.

Steveson looked as green as any 3-0 UFC debut, winging punches and looking for the early finish that had come in his previous efforts. And halfway through the first his over eager approach came back to bite him as he ended up forcing a break in action with a kick to his rival’s groin.

Once that break was over, it was as if we started from scratch and Steveson piled on the pressure. He managed to get through on a stationary and slow Ellison, who flopped to the ground after having his head pushed down during a flurry of punches.
