Warriors linked to DeMar DeRozan move amid LeBron James pursuit

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly trying to swing for the fences in free agency.

They're still in the race to sign LeBron James, but given the many options he has, they should also have a plan B.

According to NBA insider Sean Deveney, the word around the league is that the Warriors could lure Oakland native DeMar DeRozan back to Northern California.

While he's not a superstar anymore, he can still play and score at a high level, and the Warriors could give him the right setting to drive his value back up.

DeMar DeRozan needs the Warriors

“If I were his agent, I’d want to give him a chance to rebuild his value, and you’re going to get that playing with Stephen Curry, playing big minutes while Jimmy is coming back and probably still getting a lot of shots even when Jimmy comes back – he might need time to get to 100%. You’re on a one-year minimum, go where the shots are, where you’re playing in a good offense,” one prominent agent told Deveney.

The Warriors are going all-in on James, so they may not make a run at DeRozan until they figure out James' plans.

That said, we've seen former stars take massive pay cuts to team up with superstars in the past, so maybe DeRozan would want to be this team's Sixth Man, even if James puts pen to paper.

“If they don’t get LeBron, DeMar is the kind of guy they need. Sometimes you just need a guy who is a pro, who can come in and fit what you want to do and does not need a lot of hand-holding. And he plays every night. That’s really important,” the executive said.

Whatever the case, free agency will be on standby for as long as James wants. He's scheduled to make two appearances later this week, and while he may make an announcement, people can only speculate at this point.

As for DeRozan, he's not much of a floor-spacer, and that could make him an odd fit next to Jimmy Butler. That said, great players should be able to figure out how to coexist with one another.
