Cowboys urged to cut ties with $5.7 million playmaker this summer

It's hard to believe, but the NFL season is less than two months away. That's the regular season. The preseason is just about one month from now. So, it's crunch time for teams, such as the Dallas Cowboys, to get their lineups fully set.

While most of the big and surprising trades have already happened, there's plenty of time for more trades to go down before the first snap in September. So, Jerry Jones and company could shake up the franchise a bit even now, and don't be surprised if they do.

Jones usually plays it safe, but now, he's being urged to trade away one of the Cowboys' playmakers in exchange for a late 2027 draft pick. It's not a terrible idea, either.

Cowboys and Jerry Jones could benefit from trade

On Tuesday, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report lays out his reasoning for why the Cowboys should trade edge Marist Liufau, a Notre Dame product, for a late 2027 pick. Remember that with new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, Liufau, who's under a $5.7 million deal according to research from Sportrac, is expected to be in the edge-rusher role.

"In two years as an off-ball linebacker, he has been unable to make a significant impact," he writes in the piece, adding that the former third-rounder has 80 tackles, 2.5 sacks and three pass breakups in 34 games that he's played, 14 starts.

"If Liufau struggles with a move to the edge, the Cowboys could shop him before final roster cuts," he adds. "Teams in need of a rotational pass-rusher may see untapped potential in the 25-year-old at his new position."

Trading Liufau is really a fine idea. The Cowboys are pretty solid at the edge-rusher position, and trading him could help shape this team for the future with that extra 2027 pick.
