Steelers pushed to part ways with $68 million starter in surprise move

The Pittsburgh Steelers are back with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the 2026 season, and that's all fine and dandy, but what about the rest of the team's roster? The clock is ticking until the start of the season. There are really just about two months to go before the Steelers step into September soil.

The Steelers' lineup is looking pretty solid right now. But that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. There's always room to make things better.

On Tuesday, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report released a tally of trades every NFL team should make before the 2026 season. For the Steelers, he has a strong suggestion.

Steelers could make a significant trade before September

Moton thinks the Steelers should say farewell to edge Alex Highsmith, who's on a $68 million contract according to Spotrac data, and give up a Day 2 2027 pick to the Green Bay Packers.

Why? Well, the Packers need some help on the edge front, with Micah Parsons still dealing with an injury. He's still coming back from his torn ACL and meniscus damage.

"The Steelers edge-rusher doesn't have any guaranteed money in the final two years of his deal," Moton writes. "With $23.4 million in cap space, the Packers can acquire Highsmith, rework his contract and fill a glaring need on the edge."

So, will it happen? It would definitely help the Packers but not as much as the Steelers. Pittsburgh has come to rely on Highsmith, and there's no real benefit to moving him. Not now, at least. Also, while it would help the Packers, there's no guarantee that they would be interested in such a bold move just to fill up their lineup for a few weeks until Parsons is back.
