Geno Smith heads into second stint with Jets without massive distraction

Quarterback Geno Smith's first time around with the New York Jets didn't go quite as planned.

The Jets selected him with the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia with the idea that they had found their franchise quarterback.

As a rookie, he threw for 3,046 yards and 12 touchdowns with 21 interceptions. It wasn't great. In 2014, he started the season as the starter but was benched in favor of Michael Vick in Week 8. He threw for 2,525 yards and 13 touchdowns with 13 interceptions in 14 games (13 starts) in his sophomore season in the NFL.

Smith then dealt with injuries, and the Jets let his rookie deal play out. He then became a journeyman backup and eventually wound up with the Seattle Seahawks, where he first backed up Russell Wilson

When the Seahawks moved on from Wilson, Smith became the starter and resurrected his career. He was the NFL's comeback player of the year in 2022.

The long and windy road took him from Seattle to a reunion with Pete Carroll in Las Vegas with the Raiders.

And while that didn't work out, he eventually wound up back in New York with the Jets via a trade.

Smith now enters the 2026 season once again as the starting quarterback for New York, and it was recently revealed that a major distraction that he and the Jets were facing is no longer an issue.

On June 21, police officers were called to Smith's home after someone claiming to be his ex-girlfriend called 911 and alleged an assault by the NFL quarterback.

No one was taken into custody at the time

Smith didn't publicly respond to the allegations, and neither did the Jets.

Now, Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported that Smith will not be charged, and the investigation into this incident is no longer active.

"No further investigative steps can be reasonably taken with the information presently available. Any future investigative action is contingent on additional information or evidence being brought forward," according to the supplemental case report obtained by ESPN.

Geno Smith is reunited with the Jets

The Jets reacquired Smith and a 2026 seventh-round draft pick after sending a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the Raiders in March.

He's coming off a 2025 season that saw him throw for 3,025 yards and 19 touchdowns for the Raiders with 17 interceptions. He was 27th out of 28 qualified passers in Total QBR (34.1) and was ultimately benched in favor of Kenny Pickett.

Smith is back in New York, where his NFL roots took hold, though, and the Jets are undoubtedly hoping he can be a "bridge" for them as they evaluate younger developmental projects like rookie Cade Klubnik.

Whether or not he can recapture the spark he found in Seattle is an open question, but at the very least, he'll enter the 2026 season without a potential massive distraction hanging over his head.
