Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers will turn 43 years old in December, and he largely looked like a shell of his former self when he had a fourth-quarter fumble and a fourth-quarter interception returned for touchdowns in a 30-6 wild-card playoff loss to the Houston Texans.
During a chat shared on the Film Watchers' YouTube Channel on Tuesday, Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks shared a warning for members of the NFL community who think Rodgers can no longer win big games at the highest level.
"He's playing chess...," Brooks said about Rodgers, per Troy Montgomery of Steelers Depot. "You really just want to play him honest...At this point in his career, he's probably not going to take it off the top like he used to. But his superpower is his knowledge of the game, so he's still effective in that way. Really gotta be on your toes."
Rodgers has seen just about everything an opposing defense can throw a quarterback's way during his lengthy career. While the perception exists that he "doesn't want to get contacted" and wants to get the ball out quickly on pass plays, it's also believed that he could be quite comfortable playing in an offense that will feature ball-carriers Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle this coming fall.
"When you're facing a guy like him," Brooks said about Rodgers, "you really don't want to listen [at the line of scrimmage] because he's super experienced, super smart. He plays a lot of games. He might say something to throw you off, or he might do something to throw you off. You don't want to get too tied in on what he's talking about because he's playing the game within the game."
Rodgers' ability to make changes at the line of scrimmage and routinely draw opposing players offside with his cadence has made him one of the best pre-snap quarterbacks in NFL history. He physically may not be what he was even three summers ago, but Brooks nevertheless seems to understand that Rodgers can still do enough to notch victories for a Steelers team that will be looking to do more than just return to the playoffs in the signal-caller's final season as an active player.
