Back in June, Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders suggested that he and veteran signal-caller Deshaun Watson would work out with teammates together before training-camp practices get underway later in July.
However, the fact that it's thought Watson will be "hosting" such workouts has understandably caused some to assume that reports claiming he remains the favorite to win Cleveland's Week 1 starting job are accurate. During a Tuesday appearance on Cleveland sports radio station 92.3 The Fan, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared somewhat of a warning for first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken regarding what could become an awkward situation.
"I would say if you have two quarterbacks with competing camps and the receivers and the running backs and the tight ends have to pick which to go to, you have bigger problems than scheduling," Breer explained, per J.R. DeGroote of Heavy. "If that’s allowed to happen, and you’ve got drama over that, that’s probably not great."
Watson has been seen working out with multiple Cleveland players during the NFL's ongoing summer break. Sanders seemingly wasn't part of those sessions, and it remains unclear if he and Watson will co-host any workouts before veteran Browns players are due to report to training camp on July 28.
"So I think in a case like this, if one quarterback is going to put it together, then you would hope that he would let the other quarterbacks know what the plan was and invite them to be part of it," Breer added about workouts involving Browns players. "I think, generally, it would be the most veteran guy. The presumed starter would obviously be the preference, and when there isn’t one, I would think it would be the older guy. A lot of these guys do this sort of thing."
While numerous reports have hinted that Watson will enter training camp as Cleveland's "presumed starter," he and Sanders are both expected to get meaningful reps when the Browns open the preseason with a game at the Chicago Bears on Aug. 15. It remains to be seen if either Watson or Sanders will go out of the way to silence whispers about potential drama related to who worked out with who this summer before the final Tuesday of July arrives.
