Cardinals executive suspended indefinitely for violating NFL gambling policy

As legalized sports gambling continues to grow, it is inevitable that issues are going to keep happening with the teams, players and personnel involved in the leagues. That continued on Friday when the NFL announced Arizona Cardinals executive Ryan Gold has been suspended indefinitely for violating the league's gambling policy.

NFL suspends Arizona Cardinals executive for violating league's gambling policy

The league announced the suspension on Friday, but Associated Press NFL writer Rob Maaddi had the details of what, exactly, Gold did to violate the policy.

Along with participating in parlay bets involving NFL and NCAA games, Gold also "provided confidential, non-public inside information regarding 2026 Draft selections by the Cardinals before the picks were announced."

The Cardinals said in a statement that they support the suspension, and that it only involved a single team employee.

There is no word on whether or not Gold's bets or parlays included the Cardinals.

Gold is currently the Cardinals' director of college scouting, a role he has held since 2025. He has worked with the Cardinals for 13 seasons.

The NFL's gambling policy does not prohibit people within the league from betting on pro sports. It does, however, prohibit them from betting on games within the NFL, while there are also strict regulations on where they can place bets. They can not actively place bets within team facilities, during team travel, or while staying at team hotels.

They are also not allowed to utilize any inside information they may have.

While it is not clear where, exactly, Gold placed his parlay bets, the fact that they involved NFL games is a clear violation of the policy, as is his providing inside information regarding draft picks that would not have been publicly available.

Gambling scandals in sports are starting to become alarmingly common.

The NBA and Major League Baseball have dealt with significant gambling scandals in recent years, while former college quarterback Brendan Sorsby has had his career put on hold after it was revealed he bet on games his teams played in during his NCAA career. As long as gambling is legal and easily accessible, it is going to continue to be a billion-dollar business. It is inevitable that athletes and teams connected to pro sports are going to get involved. It is also something leagues need to be hyper vigilant about to make sure games are not being impacted.
