One of the biggest criticisms of the Detroit Lions has been the team's lack of getting an elite edge to pair with Michigan product Aidan Hutchinson. It's a fair point. Hutchinson can't do it alone. When he got injured in 2024, it was a huge blow to the team, and it had to scramble to find a replacement. Scrambling is never good, especially deep into the season.
So, how good is Hutchinson? Very good. He's so talented, in fact, that if the Lions were to want to trade their top player to get the most in return, that player would be Hutchinson.
It's pretty mind-boggling what the Lions would get for a hypothetical trade with Hutchinson. But they shouldn't do it. Ever. Just say no.
Bill Barnwell of ESPN has released his tally of what each NFL team could get for a variety of trade options. For Hutchinson, as well as offensive tackle Penei Sewell, he says the Lions could get two first-round picks and more. That seems right for Hutchinson but a bit lofty for Sewell.
"Hutchinson and Sewell have been elite players roughly since they entered the NFL," he says in the piece. "They're both on significant deals, but they're also in the prime of their respective careers. Sewell is moving from right tackle to left tackle, but given that he was a high-end left tackle prospect out of Oregon and has filled in on the left side in the past, I don't have many concerns about his game translating over to the blind side."
He also sees the Lions getting one first-round pick for quarterback Jared Goff, offensive tackle Blake Miller and linebacker Jack Campbell. It's fun to think about, but there's no way Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell let any of these guys go.
