The 2026 FIFA World Cup continued on Saturday with the penultimate game of the tournament. It was there that England took the third-place game with a wild and chaotic 6-4 win over France.

Does the third-place game actually matter in the grand scheme of things? Not really. Is it a game that needs to be played? Probably not. But was it wildly entertaining for soccer fans? You better believe it was.

This might have been the best game of the tournament, given the number of goals and the shifts in momentum that took place.

England stormed out in the first half with four consecutive goals going into halftime, looking as if it was going to win the game in a runaway laugher against a French side that didn't really seem to want to be there.

But then France came out in the second half and responded with three goals of its own to cut the deficit to 4-3. That set the stage for an even more chaotic finish that included a Bukayo Saka penalty kick goal that completed a hat trick for him, and then a Jude Bellingham goal in minute 90+8 to put the game away.

It's not the win England wanted in the tournament, but it still gets to walk away winning a match and a top-three finish. 

This is England's highest finish in a men's World Cup since it won the championship in 1966.

If there was a bright spot for France on Saturday, it was the fact that Kylian Mbappe scored a pair of goals, giving him 22 career World Cup goals.

That moves him ahead of Argentina's Lionel Messi for the most all-time World Cup goals.
