Rusty Wallace reveals which NASCAR team asked him to drive this year

Kaulig Racing has brought several NASCAR drivers out of retirement for one-off races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this season, including Jamie McMurray, Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Ryan Newman and Elliott Sadler, the last of whom will run the No. 25 RAM at Richmond on Aug. 14. 

NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace, who turns 70 on Aug. 14, revealed Sunday at North Wilkesboro Speedway that Kaulig also reached out to him with an offer to drive the truck.

"The Kaulig guys got ahold of me at the Betty Jane France poker tournament and asked me to do that," Wallace said in a news conference, "And I said no. And then I got a phone call two weeks ago from Ray Evernham wanting me to run at the White House in an IROC car and I said yes."

Wallace will race in an IROC (International Race of Champions) race on the streets of Washington, D.C., on Aug. 22. The race is a companion event to that weekend NTT IndyCar Series Freedom 250, which will run on Aug. 23. 

Wallace will be joined in the IROC field by Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Bobby Labonte, Bill Elliott, Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti. 

But you won't see the 1989 Cup Series champion, who last raced in NASCAR in 2005, back behind the wheel of a NASCAR vehicle anytime soon. 

"I felt personally that I went out at the top of my game," Wallace said. "And I still believe that to this day."
