Joe Flacco discusses mindset on retirement, returning to Bengals to serve as backup

Shortly after veteran quarterback Joe Flacco somewhat surprisingly returned to the Cincinnati Bengals this past March to serve as the primary backup for starter Joe Burrow, Flacco acknowledged that he felt it was "dumb" that he didn't receive an opportunity to compete for a QB1 gig with a different club early into the offseason.

During a recent chat with DJ Siddiqi of Ratings, Flacco suggested that he isn't quite ready to ride off into the sunset of retirement at the age of 41.

"No, I don’t have a target age," Flacco said about when he may retire. "I really don’t. The biggest goals are to still go out there and play and win the football game. I’d love to be able to go play and win some football games. I don’t really think I have anything more specific than that."

The Bengals acquired Flacco from the Cleveland Browns during the 2025 season, and he went 1-5 across six starts with Cincinnati when Burrow was sidelined with a serious toe injury. That said, the fact that Flacco tossed 13 touchdown passes and only four interceptions over those starts could lead one to believe that he has something left in the tank as it pertains to possibly serving as a bridge option at the sport's most important position. 

Does Joe Flacco regret re-signing with Bengals? 

Flacco may ultimately regret not remaining available through the summer if a team loses a starting signal-caller to an injury at some point during the preseason. For a Heavy article produced by Siddiqi, Flacco insisted that he hasn't yet had second thoughts about running it back with the Bengals. 

"If I’m making a decision, then I’m content and happy with that decision," Flacco explained. "It doesn’t mean it’s my ideal situation, and I still have goals. I might not be like 100% exactly what I wanted. But once I make that decision, I’m all in, you know. I don’t look backwards, and I’m not gonna feel bad about certain things. Like I said, I still have goals, and I think there’s a lot of guys on the team that have goals and desires, and are hoping to, at some point, get to realize those. I’m no different."

Flacco added that he is "excited about being back" with the Bengals. One wonders if he'll still feel that way if he takes no meaningful snaps this coming fall.
