Heat's Pat Riley not badgering LeBron James as future Hall of Famer mulls options

Miami Heat president Pat Riley and the rest of the NBA are waiting for forward LeBron James to announce where he will play his 24th season.

Miami — where James played from 2010-14 — is among multiple teams pursuing "The King" in free agency. The Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers are other potential landing spots.

The Heat and these other clubs would like to know sooner rather than later where James will sign. Riley's still not rushing him to make a decision.

"I have nothing, as I think probably everybody else that had an opportunity to talk with him are just sort of waiting," Riley said Monday on "The Dan Le Batard Show." "This is a man's decision. You let him make that decision. He has the right to do that. I'm not calling [agent Rich Paul] every day and bugging him. He'll make a decision."

While pondering that decision, will James factor in his relationship with Riley? It grew frigid after James left the Heat and joined the Cavaliers for his second tenure in Cleveland. (James played for the Cavs from 2003-2010 and again from 2014-18.)

James' decision to return to Cleveland blindsided Riley, and it still bothers him. He insists he's willing to move past that.

"LeBron and I, we haven't talked much, but you let go of that stuff," Riley said. "I was very disappointed [when he left] because I thought we were looking at a dynasty."

James returning to Miami and winning a third championship with the Heat would partially atone for the lost dynasty. He would be the last piece in a big three, featuring center Bam Adebayo and forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 22-time All-Star, who averaged 20.9 points per game in 60 regular-season games for the Los Angeles Lakers last season, would give the trio a needed scoring punch.

James has plenty of suitors in free agency, some of whom may be calling him more than Riley. But don't rule out the possibility that he will once again take his talents to South Beach.
