Rangers fortify two areas of need in trade with Angels

The Texas Rangers needed to address their bullpen and catcher position. They took care of both areas in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Rangers acquired catcher Logan O'Hoppe and reliever Chase Silseth from the Angels.

In exchange, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported that minor league infielder Angel Arredondo will be heading to Los Angeles.

While O'Hoppe may have more name recognition, he has struggled due to injuries since his breakout 2024 season. He posted a disappointing .209/.271/.295 batting line in his 256 plate appearances this season, hitting four homers and eight doubles. Grant further reported that O'Hoppe will begin his time with the Rangers in Triple-A.

Texas Rangers get needed upgrades in intra-division trade

Silseth may be the key to the trade for the Rangers. He emerged as a weapon in the Angels bullpen after converting to relief, posting a 2.72 ERA, albeit with a 1.412 WHIP, over his 39.2 innings, striking out 48 batters with 22 walks. If the Rangers can get Silseth to improve his command, he could quickly solidify himself as a part of their late-inning mix.

In exchange, the Angels get an interesting prospect in Arredondo. The 19-year-old was not listed as one of the Rangers' top prospects but has displayed solid contact skills and a strong approach at the plate. He had posted a .243/.371/.392 batting line in his 357 plate appearances in A-ball, hitting eight homers and 14 doubles. Arredondo is a long-term lottery ticket but could be a part of the Angels' future if he continues to develop.

This trade is interesting in several aspects. O'Hoppe could be a change-of-scenery candidate and may be able to return to form with a new team. Meanwhile, by trading Silseth and O'Hoppe, the Angels appear set to do something they have avoided for years — begin the rebuilding process in earnest.
