Fernando Tatis Jr. achieves career-first in Padres' win vs. Rockies

In the middle of his seventh MLB season, Fernando Tatis Jr. accomplished something many players go their entire career without ever experiencing on Tuesday night.

Tatis was a perfect 5-for-5 in the San Diego Padres' 8-7 walk-off win over the Colorado Rockies, recording the first five-hit game of his career.

Even without any extra-base hits, Tatis drove in two runs while finding a way to get on with a single in every at-bat. Before Tuesday's career night, Tatis' last multi-hit game was in Atlanta during a July 21 victory against the Braves. He's recorded seven multi-hit games in July.

Tatis' previous high was four, a mark he reached this season on June 9 in a home loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Overall, in 106 games and 417 at-bats in 2026, Tatis has 119 total hits. He's also crushed eight home runs, driven in 49 runs, scored 54, connected on 20 doubles and two triples and walked 41 times so far. Tatis' current slash line reads .285/.353/.400, a slightly higher batting average than his career clip while producing at a lower rate than usual in both OBP and slug.

But July 28, 2026, will now always be a day to remember no matter what happens throughout the rest of his career. Because to put Tatis Jr.'s memorable five-hit performance in perspective, his father, Fernando Tatis Sr., was never able to collect five hits in a game at any point in his 11 years in the big leagues from 1997-2010.

Although Tatis Sr. was a solid player, his son has already put together the more impressive resume. At only 27, Tatis Jr., a three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, has registered 839 hits through 777 MLB games compared to his father's 807 in 949.
