As the first day of training camp closed with unsettling news about a key player, Pittsburgh Steelers fans were left searching for answers about what happened to Joey Porter Jr.
Knowing he would be asked, head coach Mike McCarthy attempted to clear up the confusion about why Porter was a late addition to the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list on Tuesday.
"He had something that flared up. That's why you do the workout. That's why you do the re-entry," McCarthy told reporters.
McCarthy saying Porter "had something that flared up" helps to explain why he was the last player added to the Steelers' list of who will miss the start of training camp. Porter's inclusion did not occur until after both McCarthy and general manager Omar Khan spoke to kick off training camp and left fans speculating as to what happened since the other injuries were discussed at both media sessions.
"We'll take it day by day" is all McCarthy was able to offer as far as a timeline, although that lends credence to the belief that Porter's injury is not considered anything serious.

"He had something that flared up. That's why you do the workout. That's why you do the re-entry."
McCarthy said he doesn't want to get into a timeline for his return. "We'll take it day by day."
ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported a source told her that Porter aggravated his back earlier in the morning after arriving at training camp in Latrobe, Pa.
But the concern will remain until Porter can actually take the field and practice with his teammates. Expected to receive a contract extension, Porter is coming off a season in which he played in fewer games (14) compared to either of his first two seasons, when he was active for 16 games in 2024 and all 17 as a rookie.
At 26, Porter is set to enter his fourth NFL season. He made 52 total tackles last season (was credited with 35 as solo) and added 14 pass deflections to go along with one sack and an interception. The Penn State product and son of Steelers all-time great Joey Porter Sr. enjoyed his most productive season two years ago, when he registered 70 tackles. He's racked up 165 tackles in 47 games and 41 starts across three seasons.
