Once again, the Golden State Warriors failed to land their top target, and they'll now have to pivot to lesser options.
In what has been a worrisome trend during Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s tenure as their general manager, they missed out on LeBron James, and there aren't many options to bolster the roster now.
That's why they might need their best player to make a big sacrifice to give them a hand.
Stephen Curry is eligible for another lucrative contract extension. According to NBA insider Sean Deveney, some around the league believe he'll take a big pay cut to help his team land another star.
“I think you absolutely will see Stephen Curry negotiate on that, but he is a smart guy. He’ll want to know the options and the plan,” one Western Conference executive told Deveney.
Curry is slated to make a whopping $65 million next season. He's about to enter the final year of his contract, so he can walk away after the 2026-27 campaign. However, that seems unlikely.
He'll be eligible to sign a two-year, $137 million extension next month, but he could take a page out of Victor Wembanyama's book and not sign for the maximum.
Curry could save the Warriors around $40 million. That contract would come into effect next offseason, so he'd still have to wait for another year before getting another sidekick. Still, it would certainly give the team more options.
According to Spotrac, the greatest shooter of all time has surpassed $470 million in career earnings in his 17 years in the league, not to mention his countless business endeavors and endorsement deals, so money may not be his primary motivation now.
Even so, the mere fact that he'll have to do all of the heavy lifting and bail out the team again should be an indictment of a front office that keeps failing him.
