George Springer's resurgence helping Blue Jays gain momentum

Why George Springer is a valuable asset that the Blue Jays should hold onto

While the Blue Jays have plenty of work still left to do if they want to make a push for the postseason, their recent success has transitioned them from clear-cut sellers to retooling. 

Springer, Daulton Varsho and Kevin Gausman are all on expiring contracts set to become free agents following this season and have gained significant trade buzz as top trade candidates. But with the way Springer has been heating up, he's a valuable asset that the Blue Jays should hold onto if they can remain consistent, as they now sit four games out of a final wild-card spot. 

If the Blue Jays do a blend of buying and selling and pick up players that can increase their chances of taking a final AL wild-card spot, it could help transform their season. In early July, their offense hit rock bottom, scoring only three runs from July 3 to 6, which was a strong sign leaning them heavily towards being sellers. 

While Springer has had his fair share of offensive slumps in his career with the Blue Jays, he's continued to hustle and be a driving force as a 36-year-old veteran whose resurgence continues to make him a fan-favourite. His surge in July had him batting .274 with five home runs, and his recent dominance has been the pick-me-up the Blue Jays have desperately needed.

While his impressive stretch has certainly upgraded his trade value, when Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith asked Springer about his 10-and-5 rights following the Blue Jays' victory on Saturday, Springer stated, “I'm here. I love this team. I love this organization, and as far as I know, I'm here.”
