Brewers upgrade rotation, acquire Dustin May and JoJo Romero from Cardinals

The Milwaukee Brewers entered Monday with a 6.5-game lead in the National League Central.

Even with the comfortable lead, Milwaukee needed help in the pitching department, and it turned to a division rival in the St. Louis Cardinals to address those needs.

Dustin May, JoJo Romero headed to Milwaukee

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, the Brewers have acquired right-hander Dustin May and left-hander JoJo Romero from the Cardinals.

May will immediately slot in, while the lefty Romero will be inserted into an already solid Milwaukee bullpen when he returns from the injured list.

Milwaukee had been mentioned with names such as Clay Holmes, Freddy Peralta and even Tarik Skubal. May certainly isn't any of those top-tier names, and his struggles away from Busch Stadium this season are alarming.

May has made nine road starts this season and has posted a 6.31 ERA in those starts. Opponents are hitting .296 against him away from home, an alarming stat this late in the season.

If the package of May and Romero is the lone deal for the Brewers, it would be a bit of a disappointing trade deadline for a team that was in on so many big names. There is still plenty of time left, though, so Milwaukee may not quite yet be done adding to its roster in hopes of making a deep postseason run.
