Yankees to promote No. 1 prospect George Lombard Jr.

After a few weeks of speculation, the New York Yankees will reportedly have a new face in the clubhouse ahead of Tuesday's game.

George Lombard Jr. is getting the call

As it was first reported by YES Network analyst Jack Curry, New York will be promoting shortstop George Lombard Jr. to make his MLB debut on Tuesday.

Lombard is the Yankees' No. 1 prospect and the No. 20 overall prospect in MLB. It had been speculated for some time that Lombard would soon be joining the big league club, and that time has finally come.

George Lombard has been making great strides as a hitter

Through 289 at-bats at Triple-A this season, Lombard has posted a slash line of .284/.411/.498 with 12 home runs and 14 stolen bases.

It has been a much-improved season from his career minor league slash line of .248/.372/.391.

Defensively, Lombard has long been considered "major league ready" in that regard by Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

This may mark the end of the line for Anthony Volpe

Following New York's loss on Monday night, shortstop Anthony Volpe was one of three players, along with Jasson Dominguez and Angel Chivili, who were optioned to Triple-A.

Volpe has been given countless opportunities to perform well in the majors, but things just have not clicked like the organization has expected them to.

If Lombard comes up and produces for the remainder of the season, New York may very well be shopping Volpe in the offseason and finding a place for the young shortstop to get a fresh start.
