Bills' C.J. Gardner-Johnson has beef with Texans, 'can't wait' for Week 1 showdown

The Week 1 game between the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans was already setting up to be one of the highlights of the NFL's early-season schedule. Now it is getting a little personal beef thrown into it to raise the temperature even more.

Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson said on Thursday that he "can't wait" to see his former team, and it doesn't sound like it's so they can catch up before the game and share happy memories.

Gardner-Johnson was acquired by the Texans just prior to the 2025 season in the hopes of helping to solidify what was already one of the league's most promising young secondaries. But the early returns on the trade were so ugly that Houston ended up releasing Gardner-Johnson early in the season following an 0-3 start. 

The tipping point for the release came during (and after) their Week 3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars when an apparent missed assignment by Gardner-Johnson sparked chaos.

Texans cornerback Kamari Lassiter was fired up on the sidelines, which was reportedly following by Gardner-Johnson mimicking him. Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. then got involved in the argument, which also reportedly carried over into the locker room.

The Texans released Gardner-Johnson after the game, and then went on to turn their season around, make the playoffs, and reach the AFC's divisional round.

Gardner-Johnson has not let any of that go, and he made that very clear on Thursday. 

While acknowledging that Houston is a good team, and that he wasn't trying to speak negatively about the front office or staff, he had extremely pointed words for the players and coaches.

"They released me because I wasn't jelling with the team and I didn't fit well," Gardner-Johnson said after Bills training-camp practice. "Well, why the hell didn't the coach spoke up about it? ... After the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, they decided I didn't fit well. We was already starting 0-3, so how can it possibly be on one person?"

Players get motivated by a lot of different things, and any sign of apparent disrespect is always going to be extremely high on that list.

Gardner-Johnson is apparently going with that angle here.

Buffalo and Houston figure to be two of the top Super Bowl contenders in the AFC, and while he will never be on the field at the same time as Lassiter and Stingley Jr. you can be sure Gardner-Johnson is going to be doing everything in his power to make an impact. There might even be some potential fireworks before or after the game.
