Jonquel Jones moves up on an all-time list as Liberty top Storm

The 2021 WNBA MVP did more than reach a milestone. She finished plus-18 across 30 minutes and delivered when the Storm threatened to erase New York’s advantage. With the Liberty leading 69-65 entering the fourth quarter, Jones opened the period with an and-1 before knocking down a three-pointer.

Those six unanswered points immediately restored a double-digit lead. Seattle pulled within six several times late, but the Liberty answered each push to preserve the victory.

Jones now trails Nneka Ogwumike, who ranks sixth with 128 career double-doubles. The former MVP and WNBA Finals MVP has established herself as one of the league’s most dependable interior forces while expanding her impact as a shooter and facilitator.

Her seven assists Wednesday matched the game high and demonstrated how her influence extended beyond scoring and rebounding. Breanna Stewart led New York with 28 points and eight rebounds, while Sabrina Ionescu added 15 points and six assists.

Seattle rookie Dominique Malonga recorded 31 points and 10 rebounds, but the Storm could not prevent their losing streak from reaching 10 games. Seattle dropped to 6-27 with the loss.

The Liberty improved to 19-13 and have won six of their past seven games. Wednesday’s result also completed a two-game sweep after New York defeated Seattle 95-83 on Monday.
