Blue Jays' Brett Bateman to make MLB debut vs. Phillies

Following a highlight-reel performance on Thursday for Triple-A Buffalo and a right quad injury to infielder Luis Urias, the Toronto Blue Jays are calling up Brett Bateman for his MLB debut.

Bateman will join Toronto and be active ahead of Friday night's first game of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Bateman was acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the Kevin Gausman trade. He is a talented defender with an elite 30.2 feet-per-second sprint speed in center field and also profiles as a stable contact hitter who provides the Blue Jays with a left-handed hitter.

Across 84 games with Triple-A Iowa this season, he slashed .311/.429/.416 with three home runs, 91 hits, 33 RBI, 20 stolen bases, 62 drawn walks and 18 doubles.

The outfield prospect is a Mounds View graduate and will join Jose Soriano, who will also make his Blue Jays debut on Friday. Bateman will bat ninth in the lineup and play center field for the Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park.

Brett Bateman facing early test in majors with call-up

With Urias placed on the 10-day injured list and Rudy Martin Jr. (Triple-A) assigned, this has made room for Bateman on the Blue Jays' 40-man roster.

He will get his chance to showcase his skills in the big leagues, and while Blue Jays fans are still getting over Gausman's departure, watching Bateman make an immediate impact in the outfield shows there is more than meets the eye with the former No. 21-ranked Cubs prospect.

If he's able to help open up the Blue Jays offense and provide any sort of reliable contact, the trade will be a win for the team whose offense went 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position (RISP) for the first time in franchise history against the Cubs on Thursday.
