Anthony Richardson Sr. opens up about uncertain future with Colts after trade request

Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. requested a trade in February but then learned that teams around the NFL weren't all that interested in giving up anything of value to land his services. 

On Sunday, Richardson shared an update on his uncertain future ahead of the Colts' preseason opener at the New England Patriots.

"I haven’t really talked to my agent about that recently," Richardson said about his trade request, per Nathan Brown of the Indianapolis Star. "I haven’t really talked to anyone about that recently, so I’m not necessarily sure what’s going on with that." 

The Colts signed starting quarterback Daniel Jones to a two-year, $88M contract that could be worth up to $100M earlier this offseason. While Jones spent the spring recovering from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered this past December, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently noted that "Jones looks close to being all the way back from injury" and seems to be on track to play in the Colts' Week 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13. 

Meanwhile, ESPN's Stephen Holder mentioned on Sunday that Richardson "finds himself in a fight for the Colts' No. 2 quarterback spot" against 2025 sixth-round draft pick Riley Leonard. Richardson and Leonard are expected to split snaps in Thursday's game against the Patriots. 

Anthony Richardson Sr. wants to "back into the groove" during the preseason

"(Thursday) is just about continuing my repetition and the work I’ve been putting in," Richardson explained. "I feel like being out there managing the game and processing the live action plays, that can help me get back into the groove and feel everything out. I’m excited for it. I’ve been preparing for it. We’ll see what’s going on Thursday." 

Perhaps Richardson, a 2023 first-round draft pick, will impress during upcoming preseason games and attract attention from at least one team in need of a signal-caller. On Sunday, he suggested he will look to show improved accuracy against New England.

"I feel like I can improve a lot of things," Richardson added. "My decision making, I feel like I'm on point with the ball, and I feel like I'm [throwing] to the right spot. Sometimes I don't throw the best ball, but I feel like my decision making is pretty good so far."
