One Raiders QB 'cooking' at camp, the other 'not so much'

Las Vegas Raiders training camp is in full swing. There's been some drama. That's expected at any NFL training camp, but especially for one with a quarterback battle.

Veteran Kirk Cousins is the preferred starter going into the Raiders' season, while rookie Fernando Mendoza is learning and is expected to eventually take over.

But that Mendoza start may not come as early as expected, according to reports out of camp. Whenever a rookie steps into the NFL, there's always a learning curve, and that appears to be the case with Mendoza.

Kirk Cousins was 'cooking' at training camp

On Monday, Mitchell Renz of The Raiders' Report, who's reporting from training camp, said that Cousins was absolutely "cooking" at the Raiders' practice on Monday.

"Kirk Cousins was cooking, and yes, I like that," he said on social media, adding, "Fernando Mendoza not so much..."

In a YouTube video shared to The Raiders Report's page, Renz added that while Cousins was in top form, "unfortunately, Fernando Mendoza didn't have his best practice."

For Raiders fans who want to see Mendoza take over, it's nothing to worry about. These transitions take time.

Cousins, of course, is a vet. Even last season, when he was on the troubled Falcons roster, he recorded 1,721 passing yards and 10 touchdowns against just five interceptions in 10 games. He also had a 61.7 completion percentage and an 84.8 passer rating. So, he's a solid vet, and it's expected that he would be "cooking" in practice.
