Eagles' Vic Fangio sends Jalen Hurts warning to NFL amid rumors about uncertain future

Recently, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni mentioned how quarterback Jalen Hurts is "doing a really nice job of working through his progressions" and "handling the new things we’re asking him to do offensively" while working under first-year Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion this summer. 

While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio sent somewhat of a warning to the rest of the NFL regarding how Hurts has performed during training camp. 

Jalen Hurts getting "faster" at the age of 28?

"I think Jalen's having a good camp," Fangio said, per Tim McManus of ESPN. "I think he looks faster. Obviously we can't touch him during practice, so there's always that debate whether you had him or not [for a sack], and I think there's been a few times where our guys think they had him and they really didn't."

Questions about Hurts' future with the Eagles have hovered over the franchise throughout 2026. Multiple reporters have suggested that Philadelphia could move on from Hurts in early 2027 if he doesn't win at least one playoff game in January and if he continues to be "the source of much internal frustration" within the organization. 

As Glenn Erby of Eagles Wire/USA Today noted, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman offered no indication that he will offer Hurts a contract extension ahead of the 2026 season. Back in the spring of 2023, Hurts signed a five-year extension reportedly worth up to $255M with $179.3M guaranteed.

"I think he's moving good, and I think he's doing a nice job with the new offense," Fangio added. "A lot has been made about him and all these coordinators he's been with, but it's basically been the same offense every year. This is different, and I think he's done a great job with it."

How often Hurts takes off for either planned or improvised carries during games has sparked debates throughout his career. According to Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, opponents may have trouble keeping up with Hurts this fall whenever the signal-caller leaves the pocket. 

"I don't know what it is, but when I'm watching, and I'm running [after him], it's like a movie. It feels like I'm going slow," Carter said about Hurts. "He be moving, man. He's been working hard, and he's the one, for sure."

McManus shared that Mannion "has been dialing up a healthy amount of designed quarterback runs this summer, signaling Hurts' legs will still be a part of the attack even as Philadelphia moves to a more under-center operation." It remains to be seen if Mannion's plans will result in the Eagles getting the most out of Hurts' physical abilities over the next handful of months.
