Commanders insider shares new update on Dan Quinn hot seat rumors

A June report indicated that some people within the Washington Commanders viewed former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott as a possible eventual replacement for current Washington head coach Dan Quinn.

For a piece published on Wednesday, Commanders reporter John Keim of ESPN shared an update on the temperature of Quinn's seat heading into the 2026 season. 

Have the Commanders given Dan Quinn an ultimatum ahead of the 2026 season? 

"In Washington, Quinn said he has not been given an ultimatum leading into the 2026 season, according to multiple sources," Keim wrote. "Multiple people who have worked for [team owner Josh Harris] said that's not how he has operated in Washington or with his other pro teams, the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL's New Jersey Devils."

Quinn became head coach of the Commanders in the winter of 2024, and he subsequently guided the club to a 12-5 record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game in his first season with the organization. Under Quinn, quarterback and 2024 first-round draft pick Jayden Daniels earned NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award honors. However, Daniels was limited to just seven starts last season due to injury issues, and Washington ultimately ended the campaign with a record of 5-12. 

Commanders seem to have made a big decision regarding the future of Dan Quinn

"One person who knows him well said Quinn, who hasn't had conversations about his job with team owner Josh Harris heading into this season, according to sources with knowledge of his situation, seems to have been invigorated by 2025's downturn," Keim explained. "...According to one team source familiar with management's thinking, the owners love the culture in the building and the direction Quinn has provided."

Keim also added that "no one would say Quinn's seat is hot entering the season, and one source said any pressure Quinn feels is self-induced."

That's all well and good, but history shows things often change quickly for coaches of NFL teams that miss the playoffs in consecutive years. It remains to be seen if former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach and current NBC Sports personality Mike Tomlin will have any interest in returning to coaching this coming January. Perhaps he would be linked with the Commanders if he is open to speaking with teams and Washington endures another rough season under Quinn.
