NFL GM drops big J.J. McCarthy landing spot prediction after Vikings snub

The Minnesota Vikings have finally made a — unsurprising — decision. 

Veteran Kyler Murray beat out J.J. McCarthy for the starting quarterback job, and he'll look to earn a long-term contract after joining Kevin O'Connell's team on a one-year pact. Now, the biggest question left unanswered is whether the Vikings will keep their former first-round pick, who's now clearly the odd man out.

According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, that may not be the case, and the word around the league is that he could be on the move. More specifically, an unnamed general manager believes he could make his way to the New York Giants.

The Giants could trade for J.J. McCarthy

"Another GM floated the Giants as a team in the mix, noting Jaxson Dart’s deep injury, New York’s ongoing rebuild, and backup Jameis Winston offering limited long-term upside," La Canfora wrote. 

Jaxson Dart's erratic and careless style of play has been a talking point from the moment he made his Giants debut. He's been unapologetic about it, and after watching him deal with countless injuries in his first year in the league, the Giants have every reason to be worried about his durability and long-term outlook.

As for the Harbaugh connection, that's another factor to keep an eye on for sure. McCarthy won a national championship at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh's tutelage, and he was his biggest supporter in the predraft process.

His brother, John, probably wouldn't have taken the Giants' head-coaching job if he didn't think highly of their current quarterback situation, but still. Dart seems to be way ahead of McCarthy in his development, but countless quarterbacks have regressed after an impressive rookie season, so there are no guarantees there.

McCarthy was erratic and injury-prone in his first two years in the league, but giving up on him after just 10 career starts feels like a disservice. If the Giants are willing to make things interesting and bring the heat with a strong QB competition between two young first-rounders and the asking price makes sense, there should definitely be a conversation about this.
