Richard Boswell: Richard Childress Racing needs 'to do everything better'

Crew chief Richard Boswell had a blunt answer when asked about his approach to the final 13 races of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season. 

"We need to make our program better," Boswell, the crew chief for the No. 3 team and driver Austin Dillon, said Tuesday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "We've not had the number of top-10 finishes that we want. That's what's kind of put us into a position where we are in points (27th) and out of the discussions of making the [Chase]. We had a lot go on with losing Kyle [Busch] and bringing Austin Hill in. 

"We do qualify in the top 15, top 20 every week. But we also need to execute races, and we need to finish in the top 15 every week. So that's where we've fallen off some. When we've had top 15 speed, maybe we haven't executed the race perfectly and we haven't finished there."

Dillon and the No. 3 group have no top-fives this season and more DNFs (four) than top-10 finishes (three). 

"We just need to do everything a little bit better," Boswell said. "Build a little bit better race cars, keep pushing on our setups to be a little bit better, drivers need to hold crew chiefs accountable, crew chiefs need to hold drivers accountable — just make our program the best that we can in these last [13] races."

The good news for Dillon, Boswell and the No. 3 team is that they enter Saturday's race at Richmond as the two-time defending winners at the Virginia short track and one of the favorites to win the race. They say winning cures all, and a victory for Dillon on Saturday would certainly be a welcome sight at the RCR shop in Welcome, North Carolina.
