Christian Gonzalez has one condition to sign a new deal with Patriots

The New England Patriots reportedly tried to make Christian Gonzalez not only the highest-paid cornerback in league history, but also the highest-paid Patriot ever.

That's a lot, coming from a franchise that had the legendary Tom Brady for two decades.

Gonzalez and his camp, however, remain unmoved. In fact, they want much more than that.

According to Patriots insider Tom E. Curran, Gonzalez isn't settling for being the highest-paid cornerback now. He wants it to stay that way for the long run.

Christian Gonzalez wants more long-term financial security

"The endgame is very simple. In my estimation, what my understanding is, Christian Gonzalez does not want his contract to be obsolete within seven months," Curran said on "Arbella Early Edition." "When the new league year comes and the salary cap goes from $301 [million] to $330 million, the first corner who comes up under that new cap is going to sign for $34 [million], $35 [million]. So what Christian Gonzalez would like is not to be treated as if he's at the table in 2026, but be treated as if he's at the table in 2027. "And he'd prefer for his contract to not be obsolete in 2028, either."

Of course, this might be a bit too much. As great a player as he is, and as much as he deserves to get paid, this is just driven by ego.

It's not enough to build generational wealth; it's about ensuring he continues to earn far more than his peers for longer.

That doesn't even add up, as his deal will just drive up the baseline asking price for other cornerbacks and will eventually become obsolete, nonetheless.

Players have every right to want to look out for themselves and their families and maximize their earning potential while they still can.

That said, there's a difference between that and just making sure you're the highest-paid guy at the position, especially when you're not necessarily the best player.

Gonzalez is a rising star, and he can definitely be the top cornerback in the game in no time. In the meantime, he may have to lower his expectations or just settle for roughly $2 million in 2026 — which, you know, is still a ton of money.
